I was feeling quite fed up earlier, exhausted from taking on too much... And then I spend an hour on the phone with my incredible, inspiring and super-power mummy Susan Dixon. we giggled in fits as we recognised the challenges that this life brings. My mother's past 24 hours have been almost unbelievable - a movie script!
So the night before last, at 3am and all alone in the house, mum was woken by a crash. A raging manx storm tormenting our huge marquee erected for someones ... wedding the next morning. Outside in the dark she saw a smaller one had blown down ... but desperate to save the antique cake stands within she crawled underneaththe collapsed tent in her dressing gown - rain and wind battering her. She saved the cake stand and headed for the giant marquee.
The wind was howling, Manx gail force now up to 8. It took her an hour, freezing cold and wet, to batton down the hatches....
As mum told me this I was in hysterics - her sheer determination and commitment to everything she does so inspiring.
"but you havent heard the worst of it yet... the next morning was even worse!" she told me. "The father of the bride came to try and save the cake-stand marquee while I cooked the bride and bridesmades breakfast. The storm continued, and then when they all went to the church to be married I went in to check everything was Ok in the marquee. The main guy poles bending, the sides of the marquee blowing, flapping and wind howling. Then I looked up, and my heart sank when I saw a gaping hole in the roof on the marquee. I called the neighbours to the rescue, to hold the bottom of a gigantic ladder which I then had to climb to tie the bloody tent back together! Meanwhile they were getting married... "I know but I had to. It was either that or the bride and groom and the top table would be very wet!"
We laughed. Literally just as the wedding car drove up the drive the ladder was moved from the tent, and no doubt it looked spectacular, as if nothing had happened.
It was, of course a magical wedding and a great party!
Mummy you are amazing. You inspire me, and surprise me every day. You a undefeatable, courageous and slightly crazy!
Blessed we are to have you as a role-model in our lives...
